Background: In the era of COVID-19, effective nursing educational strategies are required to improve communication competence, nursing performance, and learning transfer as a core competency in nursing.
Methods: In the pre-experimental study, third grade nursing students (n=81) were participated to the maternity nursing practice using simulation with problem-based learning for a week or two weeks at a college of nursing in S city. Communication competence and nursing performance were measured by instructor¡¯s evaluation. Learning transfer was measured by using a self-reported questionnaire of nursing students. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson¡¯s correlation coefficient.
Results: In the result, communication competence was positively correlated with nursing performance (r=0.28, p=.011) and learning transfer (r=0.23, p=.042). Communication competence was 59.95¡¾4.44 points, nursing performance was 26.09¡¾2.35 points, and learning transfer was 4.48¡¾0.63 points in the maternity nursing practice using simulation with problem-based learning.
Conclusion: The findings provide evidence for the maternity nursing practice using simulation with problem-based learning as an educational strategy for nursing students. Thus, nursing educators should provide nursing students a variety of opportunity to obtain communication competence, nursing performance, and learning transfer.
